Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has released new gameplay footage for Batman: Arkham Origins, set to release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U and PC on 25th October 2013.
Set several years prior to the events featured in Arkham Asylum and later Arkham City; Warner Bros. Games Montréal replace previous franchise developer Rocksteady Studios to bring gamers an entirely new origin story for the Dark Knight, charting his rise from an unrefined vigilante into the legendary caped crusader that audiences know today. Along with his collection of gadgets, Batman will meet many important characters for the first time in his journey, and must work with them to explore an expanded Gotham City if he hopes to bring the emerging criminal threat to justice
As the new gameplay footage shows, over the course of a single night, Batman must survive the brutal onslaught of Gotham City’s criminal underworld after the villainous Black Mask puts out a $50,000,000 contract for his timely death. We also get a glimpse of newcomers Deathstroke and Deadshot alongside favourites such as Bane, Penguin and even The Joker out for the bat’s blood. Thankfully new gadgets like the Remote Claw that attacks enemies from afar, and a virtual Crime Scene system that can recreate a timeline of previous events, look set to help even out the odds.
Despite initial fan fears over Rocksteady Studios leaving the franchise, Warner Bros. Games Montréal have certainly matched the atmosphere of previous games and are set to deliver yet another Batman blockbuster, even if it worryingly just looks like more of the same. Prequels are always a tough act to write due to established ‘rules’ that must be followed but hopefully the new villains and gadgets will give Arkham Origins just enough freedom to break away and stand as its own entry.
