The creators of Halo have teamed up with Activision Blizzard to bring us Destiny, an ambitious first-person shooter that is constantly set in a dynamic online world.
Taking place in the distant future, Destiny casts players as Guardians of the last city on Earth. You’ll be tasked with exploring the ruins of the entire solar system, including the red dunes of Mars and the lush jungles of Venus, reclaiming what was lost during the collapse of mankind. Despite all their years with Halo, It appears Bungie haven’t strayed too far away from their renowned cinematic sci-fi storytelling for this latest project.
Whilst the game is predominantly a first-person action game, the key ingredient of Destiny is that players are always connected online. What that exactly means seems hard to define at the moment. But it is said that whilst you play through the story mode, you can encounter other players on their own adventures dynamically.Destiny also offers social spaces where you can celebrate achievements and share adventures with friends. In other words,a forum where you’ll be sending pictures of each other tea-bagging an A.I. corpse.
It does look pretty spectacular in screenshot form. Especially the four-legged mechanical tank which looks very District 9-esque. But it will be interesting to see how developer Bungie will fair on an entirely new IP that isn’t Halo. At the moment it is all sounding relatively familiar.
Destiny looks set for a vague 2014 release on Xbox 360, PS3 and unspecified next-generation platforms. But we could probably hazard a guess as to which ones it will be…
