DLC. Downloadable Content. It’s the demon we’ve all let into our lives and infect our consoles. We’ve come to accept that if we want to experience the full game, we will have to pay extra than the standard price for games. This is both a blessing and a curse, because if we get DLC such as the recent Dragonborn content for Skyrim, or before that The Shivering Isles for Oblivion, we get so much more from the game. Then we have the random DLC such as extra weapons or maps for FPS games. We’ve even come to accept on disc DLC and having to pay for Online Passes to even play some of the games we love online. However one thing has recently come to my attention is the cost of certain costumes on some Fighting Games.
Now i’m mainly a 360 player, so I can only base most of these prices on what’s on XBLA, but I assume it’s going to be roughly the same on PSN, but recently I was playing Dead or Alive 5, and I decided to go look and see whether there was any extra content available, like a few maps or some costumes as I had a few MSP lying around and there were no Indie games that caught my fancy. I saw all the usual costume packs for 240 MSP, which is the standard rate, but then I saw some more risqué content that was 1040 MSP!!!! Now I knew about the content previously as I follow Tecmo and Dead or Alive on Facebook, but paying what equates to nearly nine pounds, just for some pixelated clothing (Or lack thereof)??? Come on! That’s a bit of a rip off isn’t it? Now I know they all need to be coded in to fit the exact movement of the characters, and for some of the characters that would be slightly more difficult, but as I mentioned above, there are some clothing packs worth 240MSP. What you’re paying for really is the more adult orientated content , as the set i’m talking about is the Swimwear set, so you get to see the fighters in swimwear whilst kicking ass.
Now i’m sure there are some kids out there who would be dying to see some pixelated “babes” having no clothes on and kicking ass, but these tend to be 14 year old boys who have never seen a pair of breasts in there life and haven’t discovered on how to get round the parental block on the internet so they can go and watch some porn and there parents are innocently buying them MSP as they think they are buying their sons extra maps or missions for there games, not giving them the potential way to get access to some softcore hentai.
For comparative research, I went onto the Xbox live marketplace for add-ons and looked to see what else you could get for 1040 MSP. Here’s what I found
Halo 4 Crimson Map Pack- 800 MSP
Dishonored Dunwall City Trials- 400MSP
Max Payne 3 Painful Memories- 800 MSP
Dragons Dogma A Trial for Adventurers- FREE
You can even get Arcade titles cheaper than a pack of 12 swimwear skins for the characters. For example DOOM II is only 400 MSP and you can get hours of fun out of that. It’s a fully fledged game!
I even went to see what Tekken Tag 2 were offering as they are the main competitive market for DOA, and although they again were offering costumes (at 320 MSP) these weren’t pixelated woman in swimwear, these were items like Devil Jin Wings and the Armour King costume. Personally I wouldn’t buy them, but as you can actually customise the way your character looks like in Tekken Tag 2, these may seem like worthwhile buys, and aren’t just alternate skins for the characters.
Now I have no problem with companies charging for DLC, such is the way of the beast, but when comes down to these sort of prices for just some alternate skins, I begin to have a sinking feeling in the bottom of my heart, especially when you add in the Hitman: Absolution Nuns trailer and the Soul Calibur “jiggle” physics, it seems like some gaming companies just want to see us gamers as shut in perverts who can’t leave our rooms for fear of bumping into a mildly attractive girl and catching cooties or something.
I guess I really shouldn’t be to surprised, especially with it being Dead or Alive, after all they did release Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball which was basically just the same but in an entire game. That though, is the point, although it was a basic exploitation of their fanbase wanting to see some girls with their kit off, at least they put it in a game (whilst not a great one) whereas this is just paying nine quid for some skin.
I know I don’t have to go out and buy this content (and trust me, I haven’t, I have much better stuff to go out and buy, such as extra characters for Guardians of Middle Earth) but just seeing companies being able to go out and be able to charge that much for alternate skins was just to much to pass on without comment.
