It’s been announced today that Red 5 Studios (…makes me think of Star Wars!) will start a public beta test from Friday 25th January 2013 for upcoming game; Firefall.
Firefall is an upcoming free-to-play MMO shooter set 200 years into the future. The odds of the human race are dangerous stacked against them as they fight to survive on a hostile planet under attack from the elements and a mysterious humanoid race, known as the Chosen (don’t know why, but I thought of Halo at ‘The Chosen’ part).
This is the first of three planned weekends, with the second weekend planned for February and the third in March. You can find information for the planned beta weekends at the following URL: www.firefallthegame.com/betaweekends
You won’t need a key to partake in the beta weekend, everyone will be allowed access to the 48 hour ‘stress test’ on the game. In addition to this, each weekend will incorporate a community unlock, exclusive contest and unique theme to teach new players. This weekend features are:
- Skillshot Contest (Video) – Record and submit an epic skillshot video for a chance to win a prize pack filled with Firefall SWAG and Razer gear
- Skillshot Contest (Screen) – Screencap a stylish skillshot for a chance at being featured on the official _Firefall_ Facebook page
- Community Unlock – Play during the weekend to unlock an exclusive, customized Battleframe decal
- Livestream – Join a special episode of Firefall Live on TwitchTV to see Athene and Reese owning the competition with their own skillshots
From watching the trailer, I’m seeing things from different games I’ve come to love playing. The look and movements of the droids reminds me of Star Wars: The old Republic, there’s a hint of Halo tech in the vehicles on offer, and the way characters are armed and the jumping into the air with booster shoes is so familiar from Unreal Tournament games. I’m not seeing anything new to this game that I haven’t already seen before.
Games these days do seem to be copied from predecessors. But I got to say, everything about this Firefall does want me to play it, and I think that’s because the creators have cleverly took influence from different types of games, made a nod to them and given us something that captures it all. For that reason, I want to play it!
Here’s the trailer and if you want to find out more, check out Firefalls home on the net! As always let me know what you think about the game and if you planning on playing it.
