So we are right at the end of 2012, and what a year it has been for gaming, with the start of the new generation of home consoles with the release of the Wii U, 3DS outselling the Vita, the final demise of the DS and a host of great games. However, which one do we think was the best release this year? Now were not accounting for sales of games, which would make Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and AC3 top our lists, were looking at innovative gameplay, a game that for us, was just better than anything else out there.
What our writers thought-
Its the end of of the highest anticipated Sagas we’ve seen in a long long time – although the ending was called into question for a long time the gameplay was an improvement on everything we’ve seen before and the character relationships provided the closure on each of their individual story-lines that was required. Like the end to a perfect novel really – in addition we saw a bit of a revolution! Gamers changed, in a small way, the game itself with the released of additional story content.
The Walking Dead had a lot to live up to (with the acclaimed comic and TV series) but stands on its own two feet with the best story of the year and the best character. Interacting with Clementine and the rest of the survivors puts you in the middle of a zombie apocalypse and it’s that emotional attachment that makes it my Game of the Year by a mile.
There are games with more bells and whistles, but there wasn’t a game that felt as viscerally real as Walking Dead. This was a game predicated on the split second choices we have to make in order to survive a Zombie Apocalypse and the game utilized this simple mechanic beautifully. The choices were often simple, seemingly innocuous and sometimes heartbreaking. No game was more engrossing and emotionally draining as this one and that is why it is my game of the year
This collection was everything a Kirby fan could dream for, but unfortunately it was only released in America and Japan. It had basically every game that was released with the Kirby name on it, even the N64 version.
It has the most improved multi-player for the series and I just found it to be a hell of a lot of fun; the best part of course – Zombies!
Although this game has been released out in America and Japan for a long time, this game only made it to the UK in February and I am so glad it did. It is utterly insane and there are times I want to scream at the game, but it is also the most fun I’ve had on a game in such a long time.
So there you have it. Our top games out this year. What do you guys think? What are your top games this year? Let us know in the comments below!
