Today Lego released via their website the demo for upcoming Travellers Tales game; Lego: The Lord of The Rings.
Now I’m a massive fan of the Lego games and couldn’t pass up the chance to play the demo before its release! Join Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas as they team up with the Elves of Lórien and King Theoden to battle Saruman’s Uruk-hai at Helms Deep.
You start the level at the bottom of the Keep and have to work your way up to the top, to stop the Uruk-hai entering the Keep. You’ll have to use all the characters to force away the many Uruk-hai ladders; Legolas can use his bow and arrow to hit targets on walls and Uruk-hai. Gimli can hammer-smash the floor and Legolas can cut away objects holding the ladders to the wall.
Whilst you are Gimli you can enable other targets to pick him up and throw him at smashable targets. I haven’t tried throwing him randomly at Uruk-hai, if anyone’s tried that let me know if it works!
The level closely follows the film and is the second game in the Lego/Travellers Tales series, to give the mini figures voices, the first being Lego Batman 2: DC Superheroes. As well as having vocals, they feature the original voices from the film. I’m not sure if this is to stay in the final version of the game, as there are elements that are clearly still being worked on. I do hope they keep the original voices. The game will also feature free roam, however, the Open world mode will not be available on the PS Vita or Nintendo 3DS versions.
My only criticism of the game was Gandalf, personally for me I thought he too closely resembled Saruman, I actually thought it was Saruman! I would have liked to have seen him more Gandalf looking …!
Lego Lord of the Rings is on my pre-order list. I’m hoping it does well and Lego/TT grab the rights to do a follow on game and bring us `The Hobbit` in a few years time.
With all the success of the Lego games, it does make you wonder if there will ever come a point where we stop buying them. I personally hope to buy them for as long as they are available, and I’m dying to see an Avengers Assemble game *hint hint, Lego and Travellers Tales*
So the question is, will you be buying it?
Update: since posting this article the download link on the Lego home page has been removed, as far as we know this is still available on Xbox Live and US PSN.
