Coming fresh from Microsoft’s press conference at E3, Crytek’s Ryse: Son of Rome presents a cinematic recreation of the Roman Empire, her people, conflicts and landscapes in a graphical benchmark for the next generation of consoles on the Xbox One.
Looking at the gameplay demo it can be seen straight away the graphical power of the new Xbox One with the facial movements, lighting and shine off the armour and the amount of actions going on around you pushes past the old generation with ease. Of course it has to be expected that would be the case but Ryse: Son of Rome really impressed me with how powerful it looked, let alone all the game play combined with in it. Especially when the ship beaches on the shore ablaze and the sails and ropes are swinging around uncontrollably with smoke pouring into the sky in the background, it looks outstanding and just wets my appetite to see what more these consoles can do
Even though Ryse: Son of Rome was incredibly impressive overall and leaves me wanting to see more, there were two things that bugged me and they were purely for the fact that it was a next generation game. First was the quick-time-events that every kill seemed to have. Having a button prompt appear over the enemy when a kill came available it’s a big disconnect and especially in a historic game. Secondly was the scene when coming up to the wall where the soldiers group into the testudo formation and all of them pull out a spear that none of them are carrying and throw it at the enemy on the wall. This happens two more times and even though it’s a few seconds long, it really got under my skin.
Now you could say I’m being picky on small items and these things are more then likely to change before the game is released but as a highly polished, next generation game in a world wide press release, it looked out of place for this. But what did you think about Ryse: Son of Rome trailer? Did the historic battle scene give you a good sense of direction for the future of the next generation consoles?
